About Me

John Schmidt

For the moment, I'm first and foremost a student. I'm passionate about computer science (namely data and systems), sustainability, music, and plant-based foods!

I'm 19 years old and a third-year in college. I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin, but I now live in the heart of Atlanta.

My Education

I study computer science at Georgia Tech, concentrating my studies in computer systems and architecture as well as information and internetworks (data, internet, etc) I'm also pursuing a certificate in sustainable business and I enjoy doing research alongside my studies.

My Extracurriculars

My extracurricular involvement mostly revolves around sustainability, including a group that advocates for campus electrification, an org regarding sustainable investments, and a plant-based social and advocacy club. I've met so many fantastic people through these organizations, and I'm so grateful for the leadership positions I've taken on within them.

My Professional Experiences

I got my first internship over the summer of 2022 at Northwestern Mutual in downtown Milwaukee. My title was officially test engineer intern, but my day-to-day consisted mainly of automating tedious change management tasks. I've learned so much through the experience and met some truly incredible people, and I can't wait to see where my career goes next. (Contact me!)

My Research

During my second year at Tech, I was a part of a VIP research project revolving around air quality and equity on campus and beyond. My subteam used statistical models and some basic machine learning to calibrate the sensors, improving accuracy in high humidity conditions.

My Hobbies

I value my free time highly, and I've started to find the ways in which I love to spend it the most. I particularly love music; I've played piano for about 12 years and I constantly have earbuds or headphones on. I've also discovered how much I love cooking and learning about plant-based cuisines from all around the world.

My Future

I'm actively looking for job opportunities in software development, particlarly in low-level areas like embedded programming or distributed systems. I'm certainly still exploring where my passions lie (and I always will be), but I'm quite excited about where my path has led me so far.
